The creation of a tropical city garden in the new build development in Topsham, Exeter.
The developers rarely think about incorporating good garden design when selling houses. The plot was a big brown muddy area with sloping levels and a poorly laid garden path. We started from scratch with groundworks levelling the site into 2 separate areas. The lower level was laid with pavers and foundations for the seating structures. New French oak sleepers were imported which were individually sanded, rounded and placed in a modern formation. The design of the structure was to do a few things. To strengthen and retain the levels, incorporate raised beds and provide integrated seating.
I wanted to design a garden with zero clutter, everything was to be considered and designed into the space. The low maintenance planting scheme involved lush tropical planting. The planting needed to be hardy in order to survive the British winter. It also need to be easy to maintain for busy people requiring little gardening knowhow. A new outdoor living space was born lush with plants and ready for guests to enjoy.
Three years later its looks even better, with plants flourishing throughout the year. It even looks great in winter. The old Agapanthus flowering stalks left from summer covered in frost, catching the morning sun.
